Mark Cannon, Ph.D.
Mark Cannon is an Assistant Professor of Leadership and Organizations at Vanderbilt University’s Peabody Graduate School of Education and has had a joint appointment with Vanderbilt’s Owen School of Management for the last three years.
Before joining Vanderbilt, he attended Harvard Business School and earned a Ph.D. in Organizational Behavior from Harvard in 1998. He currently teaches courses on Work Team Management, Human Resource Management, Human Resource Planning, and Building the Learning Organization. He also teaches in Owen’s Executive Education Program. His executive education and consulting focuses on delivering feedback, managing conflict, conflict resolution, and building skills needed to navigate stressful conversations.
He teaches in Columbia University’s Executive Education’s Transition to Management Program which focuses on the skill individuals need to learn when they take on managerial responsibilities. He has also taught in George Washington University’s Coaching Certification Program. He studies conflict and other barriers to learning in organizations, such as individual and organizational defenses, and how these barriers can be reduced or overcome.
He has recently published on how organizations can more effectively capture and utilize the learning from failures. He is currently investigating mechanisms for providing feedback to top management teams in ways that enhance learning while minimizing defensive reactions. He is also co-editor of Dartmouth Publishing Company’s Organizational Psychology (volumes 1-3).He has consulted with Vanderbilt University Medical School, Monitor Company, Marriott Corporation,
Schneider Automation, North Georgia Hospitals, Little Planet Learning, U.S. Department of State, Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts.
